Time for a major breakthrough in application of FLOW CHEMISTRY

Chemical process industry is a key factor in the economy of the West European countries ever since the second half of the 20th century. The Rotterdam / Antwerp / Ruhr region still is the greatest industrial complex in chemicals in the whole wide world.

These days the time is right for a big transition in this industry, towards more intensified processes, with higher yield, less foodstock and lower energy consumption. Flow Chemistry is the obvious new paradigm for achieving this.

During the first one and a half decade of the 21st century, a number of academia, technologists and entrepreneurs picked up the opportunities of bringing together both the challenge in chemical research and industry and the chances brought by new micro nano technologies. The technology of today enables, on a commercial basis, a major breakthrough in applying Flow Chemistry.

However, so far only a limited number of people know how Flow Chemistry exactly works and what the opportunities really are, both in research and production.

MinacNed, being a quite young trade association in micro nano technology, is proud to be able to present a hands-on training course for
process technology specialists, lab researchers, process engineers and business developers from chemical industry, pharma and research institutes.

The idea is that during the day all participants experience the features of the experiments mentioned in the program. Participants will go around in the lab and get instructions to practice each experiment in a group of about seven people per session.
Organizing this training course on a not for profit basis, MinacNed acknowledges Radboud University Nijmegen for hosting this first edition of the Hands-on Training Course Flow Chemistry.

Flow chemistry testing your process
on a lab scale

See what your proposed process is doing on the flow, very fast view in a controlled reaction, in only ten minutes time.

Photochemistry in continuous flow offers multiple advantages over its batch-wise analogue. In particular, temperature control during a photochemical reaction is crucial due to possible thermal side products.
A crucial advantage of flow chemistry is the precise temperature control. This is exemplified using a photo switchable dye in a continuous flow in our microreactor platform FlowStart Evo expanded with one of our photochemistry sets and an additional microreactor.

Optimization of flow syntheses through  multiple FlowIR instruments

FlowIR is a dedicated Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) instrument for real-time monitoring of continuous flow chemistry. FlowIR is extremely small making it possible to place anywhere within the continuous reactor setup.

3. Flow control & bubble production

3.1

Coriolis mass flow controllers with pump steering

In the experiment you will gain insight into the control stability, the speed and scalability of  the Coriolis mass flow controller based on pump steering The current flow range (from 0.005 until 600 kg/hour) fits in perfectly on the micro reactor technology and offers possibilities to upscale to pilot plant level. Besides measuring mass flow, it is also possible to control the flow by direct feedback to the pump. During the Hands-on Training Course the Coriolis mass flow controller based on pump steering is demonstrated.  Besides that you can discus all your questions regarding the flow control with the specialist of Bronkhorst.

  • High throughput droplet generation of oil-in-water and water-in-oil droplets
  • Increased throughput by parallelization of droplet production nozzles
  • Possibility to play with flow rates and thereby observe the influence on droplet size and frequency

4. Flow chemistry equipment

4.1

Equipment for automated combinatorial experiments in flow chemistry

Multi Experiment scale reactions showing high yield and seamless scale-up at varying temperatures and concentrations.

FlowSyn Automated Loop Filling (FlowSyn Auto-LF) is a powerful and highly efficient module for running multiple experiments with multiple reagent inputs under different sets of  conditions.
The clever simultaneous loop filling and fraction collection saves valuable time, while the integrated wash steps prevent cross-contamination. Interactive displays of pressure and temperature on PC allow real-time reaction monitoring as well as data logging.

The FlowSyn and Polar Bear Plus scale flow reactions from mg to multiple Kg per day. Completely automated multi step reactions from -90°C to 300°C and up to 200 bar with excellent chemical resistance.
