Fluidics at the nano to micro scale is opne of a key research area of MESA+, in which the behaviour of single and two-phase fluids in a confined environment and on nanostructured surfaces is studied. Physics of the fluid at the nano scaleThe behavior and applications of droplets and bubbles on nanostructured surfaces (electrowetting, superhydrophobicity) and of liquid flow properties in micro and nanochannel (mixing, electrokinetic liquid slip, bubble cavitation for sonochemistry) are studied. High-throughput experimentation in microreactor chipsSilicon-glass microreactors with microfluidic networks and integrated analysis optics and electronics are developed to generate more reaction kinetic data in less experimentation time. Performing chemical synthesis at the scale of nanoliters to microliters allows the study of chemistry under extreme conditions like high pressure, high electric field, or supercritical conditions, or with toxic or explosive reactants. AnalyticalmicrodevicesforLifeScienceLiquid chromatography at high speed with ultimate resolution, in micro and nanostructured devices, with integrated injection and detection functionality, as well as the coupling to spectrometric methods like MS and NMR, are developed and applied to chemical, medical and biological problems. MESA+ is one of the largest nanotechnology research institutes in the world, delivering competitive and successful high quality research. It uses a unique structure, which unites scientific disciplines, and builds fruitful international cooperation to excel in science and education. MESA+ has created a perfect habitat for start-ups in the micro-and nano-industry to establish and to mature |
