FutureChemistry develops, implements and sells microreactor hardware and procedures for optimising and screening chemical reactions and processes. Microreactor technology is currently emerging as a new way of investigating chemical process steps. The technique is very promising because microreactors have some intrinsic advantages:

  • improved control over process parameters,
  • enhanced safety for production of chemical compounds (including hazardous, toxic and energetic compounds),
  • less chemical waste and less consumption of precious starting compounds.

But the major driver behind the usage of microreactor technology is because the key step in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industry is the characterization and scaling-up of a chemical processes. Especially for the pharmaceutical industry, the step from the discovery of a new molecule to a well-developed manufacturing process on a kg-scale is a time-delaying step. And delaying the time-to-market is the major barrier to successful commercialization.  With process development performed in continuous flow microreactors, outscaling to larger continuous flow installations is easy and the time needed to ramp up is decreased to a minimum.

FutureChemistry translates conventional batch processes to flow chemistry, identifies the critical parameters of a chemical process and optimizes them to ensure efficient synthesis. FutureChemistry investigated many chemical reactions in glass microreactors and developed a fully automated microreactor platform for chemical reaction screening,  and laboratory scale production.

FutureChemistry is based in the Technology and Science park of the Radboud University Nijmegen and has a strong connection to this university and the German Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. This strong rapidly expanding knowledge network ensures a fast implementation of recent scientific and technological breakthroughs.
