The BIOS/Lab-on-a-Chip Group (“Miniaturized systems for biomedical and environmental applications”) aims at the research and development of Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) systems. In our vision, in the future there will be an increasing convergence of micro- and nanotechnologies with physics, chemistry and life sciences to improve the quality of life. Therefore, we see it as our mission to:
- further the knowledge and understanding of nanofluidics
- bridge the gap between users from physical, chemical, biomedical and life-sciences fields
- develop new micro- and nanotechnologies
- demonstrate the potential of LOC applications
The BIOS group has considerable experience in all relevant fields of micro fabrication technology, like dry and wet-chemical etching, photolithography, wafer bonding, and thin film deposition. The group has access to a 1000m2 clean room in which all these techniques are available, and has ample experience in device physics, modelling and design, electro-osmotic/phoretic flow principles, nanofluidics and integrated chemical synthesis and analysis systems.
The BIOS/Lab-on-a-Chip group research is focused at 4 main topics:
1) Micro- and nanofluidics
2) Electrochemical sensors and systems
3) Nanosensing and technology
4) BioMEMS/Cells on Chips
The activities of the BIOS group are fully incorporated in the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology of the University of Twente.
Medimate BV, Diagnostics at the Point of Care
Originated from the Bios Lab on a Chip group in 2005, Medimate develops and markets state of the art Lab on a Chip technology for diagnostic use.
Medimate is the first known company worldwide to successfully miniaturize Capillary Electrophoresis technology to enable patients to perform electrolyte measurement within two minutes, from one droplet of blood at any location using a Point of Care measurement apparatus.
The core competences of Medimate are:
- Lab on a Chip technology & applications
- Microsystems fabrication
- Systems engineering
- Production of Lab on a Chip disposables
- Implementation of health care innovations
The first product Medimate will offer as a self test to the market is the measurement of the toxic electrolyte lithium that is used as medication for patients with Manic Depressive Illness, also called Bipolar Disorder.
Medimate estimates to launch the first product in the second half of 2009.
