Science meets industry and talent. Collaborative insights: Looking back at the International MicroNanoConference 2024

We look back on a very successful two-day International MicroNanoConference at the Eindhoven University of Technology. The event brought together scientists, industry, and students to discuss how micro-, nano-, and quantum technology can solve societal challenges. A summary of the highlights:

Keynote Speakers

Prof. Dr. Bert Meijer (TU Eindhoven): Prof. Dr. Bert Meijer is a leading scientist in the field of supramolecular chemistry. During his keynote on the first day of the iMNC, he spoke about the transition from supramolecular polymers to functional materials and systems. He emphasized how these materials have self-assembling properties that can lead to innovative applications in medicine, electronics, and materials science. His research focuses on designing and synthesizing new supramolecular systems with unprecedented properties and functions.

Sjoerd Verduyn Lunel (ASML): Sjoerd Verduyn Lunel, head of Scanner Research at ASML, provided a comprehensive overview of ASML’s pivotal role in the chip industry. Highlighting the collaborative efforts of ASML’s 40,000 employees, the lecture showcased how they collectively build the most complex machines in the world. The mission of ASML, as emphasized, is to deliver complete solutions to their customers, enabling them to continue adhering to Moore’s Law. This mission drives fundamental innovations across a wide array of scientific disciplines.

Following the overview, the speaker delved into the specific challenges associated with materials in harsh plasma-dominated environments. The lecture concluded with a discussion on the necessary innovations and the key players required to advance research in this exciting and demanding field.

Prof. Dr. ir. Albert van den Berg (University of Twente): Prof. Dr. Albert van den Berg presented his groundbreaking work in the field of labs and organs on chips. He discussed how these technologies can contribute to both healthcare and climate research. His research focuses on developing miniaturized systems that can mimic biological processes, which can lead to faster and cheaper drug development, personalized medicine, and improved disease models.

Prof. Ziad Melhem (QUIC): Prof. Ziad Melhem, founder and CEO of Oxford Quantum Solutions Ltd, provided an overview of the European Quantum Industry Association (QuIC) and the synergy between quantum and nanotechnology. He discussed how nanotechnology contributes to the development of quantum sensors and other quantum applications, and how these technologies can enhance each other. His presentation highlighted the important role of Europe in the global quantum technology sector.

Prof. Dr. ir. Karin Schroën (Wageningen University & Research): Karin Schroën discussed the role of nano- and microtechnology in the food industry. She explained how these technologies can contribute to more sustainable food production processes and the development of new food products. Her research focuses on using microtechnology to isolate and test food ingredients, which can lead to better-defined and healthier food products.

Break-out sessions

Throughout both days, several theme sessions were organized by session chairs and speakers, covering various themes like: micro- and nanofabrication, quantum and photonics, security and safety, materials, microfluidics, health, agrifood and water, and NanoLabNL.

NanoLabNL Userday

The NanoLabNL Userday was organized for the first time, where users of the NanoLabNL facilities and colleagues of the five NanoLabNL hubs presented their research, work and applications. This provided a unique opportunity for networking and knowledge exchange between NanoLabNL personnel, NanoLabNL users and lab equipment manufacturers. Combining the Userday with iMNC turned out to work really well from both sides, and it was agreed to continue this collaboration for the upcoming iMNC.

Pitches

Two pitch sessions were held, one for the exhibitors and one for the poster presenters. With eleven pitchers, the poster pitch session was particularly lively, and attendees were impressed with the participants’ preparation.

There were also winners for the pitch and poster.🥇
Mrs Tami Israeli of Polyteknik won the Exhibitor pitch, the Poster of the Year went to Xiaojun Yang of Saxion, and Roy de Kinkelder of Saxion won the prize for the best Poster Pitch. Congratulations all!

The event provided a platform for in-depth discussions, innovative ideas, and future collaborations. It was an inspiring gathering for everyone involved in micro- and nanotechnology.

We want to thank everyone for participating and hope to see you next year at the combined iMNC25 / NanoLabNL Userday on 18 and 19 November in Delft!
