EUREKA Subsidie zoekt voorstellen voor waterstof innovaties

Tot en met 4 november 2021 is het mogelijk om voorstellen in te dienen voor internationale R&D-samenwerkingsprojecten, gericht op innovatieve oplossingen rondom het transport van waterstof. De beste projectvoorstellen worden gehonoreerd met subsidies tot 500.000 euro. Lees hier meer.

Waterstof vraagt om nieuwe innovaties

Waterstof biedt grote kansen voor de toekomst. Maar het benutten van die kansen vraagt om veel onderzoek. Bijvoorbeeld: hoe kunnen gas-netwerken geschikt worden gemaakt voor het transport van waterstof? En hoe zit het met de efficiency (en de risico’s) bij opslag en transport? Andere vragen hebben betrekking op bijvoorbeeld materiaal-eisen, op ‘slimme’ aanpassingen aan de infrastructuur (monitoring, controle, sensoren, smart meters), of uitdagingen rondom het integreren van ‘vaste’ infrastructuur met mobiele transportvormen (per schip, over de weg).

Dit zijn allemaal onderwerpen die voorkomen in een recente subsidie-call van het Eureka-programma: ‘Green Hydrogen – European Infrastructure for transporting hydrogen’. In deze call worden partijen opgeroepen om voorstellen in te dienen voor internationale samenwerkingsprojecten rondom R&D en innovatieve oplossingen waarbij groene waterstof een centrale rol speelt.

Europese call voor waterstof-infrastructuur

In de call ligt veel nadruk op innovatieve oplossingen voor het transport van waterstof. Het gaat daarbij om onder meer:

  • analyses van verschillende transportopties (bijvoorbeeld direct transport versus LOHC, versus waterstofdragende stoffen) of van potentiële invoerroutes voor waterstof van overzee;
  • het combineren van netwerken voor elektriciteit, gas en verwarming (en de integratie van waterstof daarin);
  • internationale certificeringsopties voor waterstof en waterstofderivaten;
  • overgangsontwerp van gas naar geïntegreerde energienetwerken voor Europa;
  • R&D gericht op 100% hernieuwbare (groene) waterstof geïntegreerd in verschillende consumptiesectoren, waarmee het gebruik van fossiele grondstoffen fors verlaagd kan worden.

Daarnaast biedt de call ook ruimte voor andere waterstof-gerelateerde innovaties, bijvoorbeeld in thema’s als:

  • batterijen en brandstofcellen (en de bijbehorende productieprocessen);
  • proefinstallaties voor H2-opwekking en -opslag uit hernieuwbare bronnen (wind, zon);
  • nieuwe apparaten/systemen voor controle, regeling en distributie van waterstof (en daarmee verband houdende processen, met inbegrip van nieuwe materialen en sensoren);
  • verbeterde infrastructuren voor waterstofproductie, -gebruik en -uitbreiding (engineering, simulaties, constructie, logistiek);
  • nieuwe processen waarbij waterstof wordt gebruikt op industrieniveau (met name zware industrieën die van oudsher olie en gas gebruiken, zoals chemie, cement, scheepvaart).

Deadlines, doelgroep en subsidiebedragen

Het insturen van projectvoorstellen voor de Waterstof-call is nog mogelijk tot 5 november 2021. Dit is alléén mogelijk voor partijen uit de volgende acht landen: Nederland, België (Vlaanderen), Canada, Duitsland, Finland, Ierland, Portugal en Spanje.

Het beoogde project moet in ieder geval:

  • bestaan uit werkzaamheden gericht op de bovenstaande onderwerpen en thema’s;
  • worden uitgevoerd door een internationaal samenwerkingsverband (bestaande uit minimaal 2 samenwerkende partners uit de bovengenoemde landen);
  • worden gekenmerkt door een evenwichtige inbreng van de partners (hiervoor geldt een ratio van maximaal 70% – 30%);
  • een duur hebben van maximaal 36 maanden en van start gaan vanaf 15 mei 2022.

Projecten die in Brussel positief worden beoordeeld, kunnen vervolgens een subsidieaanvraag indienen (op nationaal niveau). Die tweede fase loopt voor Nederlandse partijen van 15 november 2021 tot en met 18 januari 2022. Zij kunnen een nationale Eureka subsidie aanvragen tot 500.000 euro. Het beschikbare budget voor Nederlandse projectpartners bedraagt in totaal 2 miljoen euro. Voor partijen buiten Nederland gelden afwijkende bedragen en termijnen.

Nieuwe NWO subsidie instrumenten beschikbaar

Vergrijzing, diabetes type 2, tekort aan zorgpersoneel; onze samenleving staat voor grote uitdagingen die vragen om meer kennis en baanbrekende innovaties. Dat biedt kansen voor wetenschappers, bedrijven en publieke partijen. NWO speelt daar op in door jaarlijks via diverse subsidie-instrumenten ruim €100 miljoen te investeren in onderzoek waarin publieke en private partijen samenwerken.

De rol van het MKB

Om tot maatschappelijke en economische impact te komen is de deelname van het MKB noodzakelijk en is daarom in alle instrumenten een belangrijk partner in het onderzoek. Door het delen van kennis en het samenwerken aan innovaties kan er een vertaalslag worden gemaakt van onderzoeksresultaten naar oplossingen voor de maatschappij. Voor onderzoek dat gefinancierd wordt binnen het Kennis- en innovatieconvenant (KIC) hanteert NWO stimuleringsmaatregelen om het MKB beter te betrekken. NWO stelt twee nieuwe instrumenten beschikbaar.

Over de NWO-instrumenten

  1. Bij ‘Vraag voor Partners’ ontwikkelt een publieke en/of private partner in een partnerschap met NWO een onderzoeksprogramma rondom een bepaalde kennis- en/of ontwikkelvraag. De partner is medefinancier (min. €1.5 miljoen cash) in het programma en NWO verdubbelt dit bedrag. Dit instrument is daarmee vooral geschikt voor (een combinatie van) publieke en/of private partijen die een thematisch onderzoeksprogramma van aanzienlijke omvang willen initiëren.
  2. Bij ‘Vraag voor Consortia’ dient een consortium van kennisinstellingen, publieke en private partijen een onderzoeksvoorstel in ter beantwoording van een zelfgekozen kennis- en ontwikkelvraag.

De financiële NWO-bijdrage aan deze instrumenten is beschikbaar voor fundamenteel en praktijkgericht onderzoek, uitgevoerd door wetenschappers in samenwerking met bedrijven. De mate van cofinanciering door private partijen is voor deze instrumenten vastgesteld op 50%, en tenminste 30% van de totale omvang van het partnerschap.

Quantum Delta NL lanceert microfonds van twee miljoen Euro voor quantum startups

Quantum Delta NL kondigt de lancering aan van een microfonds van twee miljoen euro genaamd ‘LightSpeed ​​Fund 1’. Het fonds zal zich richten op het ondersteunen van quantum startups in een vroeg stadium. De Delftse startup en deelnemer aan het LightSpeed-programma QuantWare is de eerste startup die financiering ontvangt.

Het fonds maakt onderdeel uit van de strategische roadmap van Quantum Delta NL om het aantal succesvolle quantum startups in Nederland te vergroten. Op dit moment zijn er zeven quantum-startups in Nederland en Quantum Delta NL is op een missie om dit aantal te zien groeien tot 100 in 2027. Deze bedrijven worden beschouwd als van grote waarde voor de Nederlandse economie.

Om dit doel na te streven, lanceerde Quantum Delta NL vorige maand haar nieuwe initiatief LightSpeed. Lightspeed is een programma dat Nederlandse quantum-startups in alle fasen met elkaar verbindt, waarbij de startups hulp en begeleiding op maat krijgen om hun bedrijf op te schalen en hun aantrekkelijkheid voor topinvesteerders te optimaliseren. Specifiek voor het initiatief is getracht om Europese en Amerikaanse fondsen met een schat aan ervaring te benaderen en binnen te halen om startups te ondersteunen. Lightspeed streeft ernaar optimale omstandigheden te creëren om duurzame en toekomstbestendige startups te bouwen.

Fonds

Na de lancering vandaag van het microfonds, beheerd door LightSpeed, kent Quantum Delta NL pre-seed tickets van elk 50.000 euro toe aan early-stage startups op het gebied van quantumtechnologie. LightSpeed ​​heeft een modern instrument aangepast dat rechttoe rechtaan, oprichtervriendelijk is en de leemte opvult in de vroegste fase voor startups in quantumtechnologie: de SAFE-notitie (Simple Agreement for Future Equity). Deze aanpak geeft startups de maximale flexibiliteit die nodig is in de vroegste stadia, met name in de kwantumtechnologieruimte, aangezien de ontwikkelingstijdlijnen en de weg naar winstgevendheid veel verder gaan dan die van klassieke startups. De investering hoeft niet te worden terugbetaald, zoals bij een traditionele converteerbare lening of bankbiljet, als een startup niet doorgaat.

Quantum Delta NL’s Investor in Residence Ton van ’t Noordende verduidelijkt: “Nederland heeft wereldwijd een toppositie als we kijken naar het aantal startups in quantumtechnologie. Dit is helaas niet het geval aan de kapitaalzijde, aangezien er vrijwel geen professioneel durfkapitaal beschikbaar is voor beginnende kwantumstartups. Ons doel met Lightspeed is om oprichters in staat te stellen de best mogelijke start van hun bedrijf te krijgen.”

Quantum Delta NL heeft op dit moment twee miljoen euro uitgetrokken voor de Pre-Seed tickets en is van plan om in boekjaar 2021/2022 5 tot 15 tickets toe te kennen en 35 tot 40 tickets over de totale periode. Het budget zal worden verhoogd zodra fase 1 van het National Growth Fund-programma van start gaat.

QuantWare

QuantWare, een spin-out van QuTech en onderdeel van het Quantum Delft-ecosysteem dat hoogwaardige kwantumprocessors ontwikkelt, is de eerste startup die gebruikmaakt van het microfonds als onderdeel van een grotere investeringsronde. Daarmee is het het tweede succesverhaal in het LightSpeed-programma. LightSpeed ​​heeft ook de Delftse startup QphoX ondersteund en begeleid in hun fondsenwervingsronde, die met de hulp van het LightSpeed-team twee miljoen euro heeft opgehaald om hun Quantum Modem op de markt te brengen.

Ambition

Startups en het opbouwen van een zakelijk ecosysteem zijn belangrijke pijlers van het Quantum Delta NL-programma dat in april 615 miljoen euro ontvangt van het Nationaal Groeifonds. Het programma voedt onder meer de verdere ontwikkeling van de eerste Europese quantumcomputer en een quantuminternet, open toegankelijk voor eindgebruikers in het bedrijfsleven en de maatschappelijke sectoren, waaronder het onderwijs. McKinsey berekende dat het programma op middellange termijn het bruto binnenlands product met 5 tot 7 miljard euro zal verhogen en 30.000 hoogwaardige banen in Nederland zal creëren.

Freeke Heijman, directeur Quantum Delta NL: “We willen dat de kennis uit de wetenschappelijke laboratoria leidt tot nieuwe bedrijvigheid in Nederland en Europa. Met LightSpeed ​​en dit fonds krijgen kansrijke initiatieven een ongekende versnelling om hun idee op te schalen naar een startup of scale-up.”

Ton van ’t Noordende, Investor in Residence Quantum Delta NL: “Wij zien het microfonds als een logisch verlengstuk van LightSpeed. Veelbelovende initiatieven in een vroeg stadium hebben slechts een kleine kapitaalinjectie nodig om van start te gaan. HitMat Call 2021

Om het belang van hightech innovatie in de maatschappelijke thema’s en missies duidelijk te maken én aan te jagen organiseert Topsector HTSM jaarlijks de HiTMaT Call, een stimuleringsprogramma om consortia te inspireren tot kansrijke hightech oplossingen in PPS onderzoeksprogramma’s.

Van Cybersecurity tot circulair bouwen

Onderwerpen die in de onderzoeksvoorstellen aan bod komen zijn onder andere cybersecurity by design, ultrasone hersenmodulatie, optimalisatie van verkeersdoorstroming in de stad, extractie van stikstof verbindingen uit dierlijke mest en eco-efficiënt en circulair bouwen.

HiTMaT Call 2021

De derde HiTMaT Call is geopend. De HiTMaT is een competitie tussen de beste R&D voorstellen voor high tech PPS die oplossingen bieden voor de maatschappelijke thema’s en missies van Nederland. In 2020 zijn 60 onderzoeksvoorstellen ingediend, waarvan er 15 genomineerd zijn en uiteindelijk 10 projecten €25.000 kiemgeld wonnen. Wie heeft er dit jaar de beste ideeën?

Projectvoorstellen kunnen worden ingediend vanaf 7 april via de website* van de HitMat Call 2021. De deadline voor het indienen van aanvragen is 18 mei 2021, 14.00 uur CEST.

HiTMaT 2019 en 2020

Na een voorzichtige start in 2019 hebben we in 2020 maar liefst 60 projectvoorstellen ontvangen van wetenschappers uit bedrijfsleven en onderzoeksorganisaties. Vijf expertcommissies selecteerden 15 voorstellen als finalisten van editie 2020. Op woensdag 7 oktober 2020 presenteerden de 15 finalisten hun onderzoeksvoorstel. De bekendmaking van de 10 prijswinnaars vond plaats tijdens het Najaarsevent op 30 oktober 2020. Deze winnaars krijgen een bedrag van € 25.000 aan kiem-geld voor een publiek-privaat samenwerkingsproject waarin hun hightech onderzoeksinnovatie verbonden wordt aan een van de 5 maatschappelijke thema’s (Gezondheid en zorg, Klimaat en Circulaire Economie, Veiligheid, Mobiliteit, Landbouw, Water en Voedsel).

Key Technologies pre-registration call

Consortia including research institutes and public and private organisations can submit project proposals for fundamental or application-oriented research on innovative and groundbreaking technologies within 8 clusters of key technologies:

  • Nanotechnologies
  • Chemical Technologies
  • Digital Technologies
  • Engineering and Fabrication Technologies
  • Photonics and Light Technologies
  • Advanced Materials
  • Quantum Technologies
  • Life science technologies

Purpose

The call Key Technologies calls for the development of initiatives over the full width of the KIA Key Technologies. Thus she strenghtens the technology base in the Netherlands and enables topsectors to solve societal challenges adequately. The outcome of the research is broadly applicable en has a large impact on science and/or society.

Who can apply?

Pre-proposals and full proposals are submitted by the main applicant and one or more co-applicants. Besides the main and co-applicant (s), a consortium always consists of two or more co-funders. In addition, other private and / or public organisations can participate in the consortium as collaborating partners. All participants must play an active role in the formulation of the research questions and the design and realisation of the project.
More information about specific conditions regarding who can apply can be found in section 3.1 of the call for proposals.

What to apply for?

A budget of 11 million euros is available for this call for proposals. Funding can be requested for research proposals with a total budget of at least 750,000 euros and at most 2,500,000 euros. NWO will fund a maximum of 70% of the total project budget; the rest of the funding must be contributed by co-funding. Co-funding may be provided in-cash or in-kind, but at least half of the amount must be in-cash. At least 50% of the total co-funding must be from private sources. More information about the conditions for co-funding can be found in section 3.5.2 of the call for proposals.

Venture Challenge: Registration open for new edition

From this week onwards, starting entrepreneurs in the life sciences & health sector can once again register for a new edition of the Venture Challenge. Teams that pass the selection round will receive professional guidance for the development of their business case.

The upcoming spring round of the Venture Challenge will start mid-April with a first boot camp and is being organised on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) by NWO and top sector Life sciences & Health (Health~Holland). After an intensive trajectory of about two months, the participants will pitch their plans to a jury of investors and other experts on 18 June. The deadline for registering for this round is 12 January 2021. After that, based on the advice from the advisory committee, the board of NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences will determine which teams will be admitted (see the brochure for the exact procedure).

Bringing the invention to the market

The Venture Challenge was set up by Health~Holland with the aim of providing starting entrepreneurs in the life sciences with professional support during the development of their business case. That helps with applying for funding and, ultimately, the marketing of the invention. Participation is open for teams of three to five people who have established a new start-up in the area of life sciences & health or will do that shortly. The product or service is based on a new technological invention or a new application of existing technology, which has emerged from scientific research. The programme consists of two, three-day long boot camps and regular coaching sessions. During these sessions, the participants work on setting up or refining their business case under the guidance of experienced coaches from the consultancy GameChanger Challenge.

PacingCure and SLAM Ortho winners 2020

The winners of both rounds from 2020 were announced during the online Dutch Life Science Conference last Friday. The spring round was won by PacingCure, a biotech start-up from Amsterdam that employs an innovative and precise approach to develop gene therapies for prevalent cardiac arrhythmias. Start-up SLAM Ortho from Delft, developer of precise measurement equipment to optimise drilling in bones, won the recently completed autumn edition of the Venture Challenge. Both winning teams received a cheque worth 25,000 euros that they can use to invest in the further expansion of their business.

Deadline for registration: 12 January

Candidates who submit the fully completed registration form by 12 January have a chance of securing one of the at most six available places in the upcoming spring round. NWO Take-off phase 1 – Feasability studies WO

Researchers from NWO recognized university institutions and innovative starters can apply for funding for a feasibility study or early phase project at a starting company. Take-off stimulates activity from the knowledge institutions.

Entrepreneurial researchers who wish to find out whether their innovative research results has commercial potential can apply for a Take-off phase 1: feasibility study grant. This grant is aimed at stimulating and supporting new start-ups using university knowledge. The grant comprises 40.000 euros, to be used within 6 months. The Take-off programme is aimed at stimulating and supporting business and entrepreneurship from (applied) sciences. .

NWO Key technologies: collaborating on technological breakthroughs

NWO is making 11 million euros available for research in which public and private parties collaborate on technological breakthroughs. Key technologies are technologies of the “future” that will have a huge impact on the way we live, learn, work and produce. They are technologies that discard our ideas about what we consider possible and potentially lead to breakthrough innovations.

Technological breakthroughs

The Key Technologies call is aimed at financing fundamental and application-oriented scientific research into technological breakthroughs to create economic opportunities for the Netherlands and contribute to solving societal challenges.

Key technologies create new business and markets, increase competitiveness and boost job growth. They enable groundbreaking process, product and / or service innovations and are relevant for science, society and the market. Key technologies are characterized by their wide applicability and reach: deployment is possible in various sectors and / or innovations.

From the perspective of the potential contribution of technology to societal challenges in the Netherlands, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has designated the following clusters of key technologies:

  • Digital Technologies

Application

Who

Pre-proposals and complete applications are submitted by a main applicant and one or more co-applicants. An application is drawn up by a consortium, in which other participants are involved in addition to the applicants.

In this round, funding can be requested for research proposals with a total size of a minimum of € 750,000 and a maximum of € 2,500,000. NWO funds a maximum of 70% of the total project size; the rest of the funding is provided through compulsory co-funding.

Perspectief round 2020/2021

Perspectief round 2020/2021 is opened as of 20 July. The call for proposals is available (in Dutch). Register your programme iniatitive via this form.

Generally speaking, the same conditions apply as for the previous round, but there are several changes, including:

  • Cash co-funding is not compulsory in the 2020/2021 round (a measure due to the coronavirus crisis). The total co-funding required is still 30%;
  • The co-funding percentage for TO2 institutions has been reduced from 50% to 30%. With that, the co-funding percentage required for TO2 research is the same as that for other applicants;
  • A researcher may only submit one programme design or programme proposal per Perspectief round as the main applicant, and may be involved in a maximum of two applications or proposals.

The most important dates are:

  • Deadline for registering programme initiative on website (phase 1): Thursday 22 October, 14.00 CEST (use this form for registration)
  • Deadline for submitting programme proposal (phase 2): Tuesday 15 December 2020, 14.00 CET (by email to ttw-perspectief@nwo.nl)

European Green Deal call

To respond to the urgency and ambition of the European Green Deal objectives, Horizon 2020 will support additional Green Deal related research and innovation with a call worth close to €1 billion.

What the call aims to do

The Green Deal call will mobilise research and innovation to foster a just and sustainable societal transition aiming at ‘leaving nobody behind’. Projects are expected to deliver tangible and visible results relatively quickly and show how research and innovation can provide concrete solutions for the Green Deal main priorities.

This is why the call will support:

  • pilot applications, demonstration projects and innovative products
  • innovation for better governance of the green and digital transition
  • social and value chain innovation

In addition to technological development and demonstration, the call encourages experimentation and social innovation for new ways to engage civil society and empower citizens.

In relation to the current pandemic, the call will contribute to the green and digital recovery and to increasing societal resilience for example in agriculture, biodiversity acceleration of renewables, clean transport and modernisation towards a clean and circular industry.

How is the call structured?

The call contains 11 areas

Eight thematic areas reflecting the key work streams of the European Green Deal. In each area, one or more topics addresses the challenges outlined in the respective stream. Topics target specific, high-impact technological and societal innovations that can help advance the sustainable transition relatively quickly.

Three horizontal areas (strengthening knowledge; empowering citizens; and international cooperation) that cut across the eight thematic areas and offer a longer-term perspective in achieving the transformations set out in the European Green Deal.

Stakeholder survey results

A stakeholder feedback survey on the call areas ran from 19 May to 3 June. Thank you to all who took part. We received almost 6000 survey responses and 500 documents were uploaded.

Background

Fighting climate change and making Europe climate-neutral by 2050 is one of the main priorities of the European Commission. In support of this priority, the Commission is reinforcing Green Deal-related research and innovation with this dedicated call for proposals under the current research and innovation programme – Horizon 2020. Additional research and innovation initiatives will be funded under the next EU research and innovation programme – Horizon Europe.
